Hi! I’m Angela Brunney, a passionate Gifted Specialist for Columbus City Schools. For 31 years, I’ve had the privilege of sharing my love of learning with students and helping them grow both academically and personally. Building real connections in a safe, nurturing environment has always been at the heart of my teaching philosophy. When students feel supported and valued, they thrive — not just in the classroom, but in life.

One of the most meaningful ways I’ve been able to extend that philosophy beyond the classroom is through Girls on the Run (GOTR). This incredible nonprofit organization offers a fun, experience-based curriculum that integrates running for girls in grades 3 through 8. GOTR focuses on developing social, emotional, and physical skills while encouraging lifelong healthy habits.
As a runner for over 20 years, I deeply believe in the GOTR mission. Each year, our school proudly participates in the program. Our staff members sponsor the participating students and gift them with new running gear to wear on race day — a small gesture that makes a big difference in helping the girls feel confident and prepared.

This year, I had the joy of sponsoring and running the 5K alongside Ruth Castellano-Sanchez, a fifth grader I’ve had the honor of teaching since kindergarten. Watching Ruth and the entire team of girls train, persevere, and ultimately cross that finish line was incredibly inspiring. Their determination and joy were a powerful reminder of what can happen when young people are given the tools and encouragement to believe in themselves.
The 19th-century historian Henry Adams once said, “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops.” That sentiment resonates deeply with me. Through experiences like Girls on the Run, I hope to leave a lasting impact — helping these young women grow into stronger, healthier, and more confident versions of themselves.
If you’re inspired by the mission of Girls on the Run and want to get involved, reach out to your local chapter to learn how you can volunteer, coach, or support the program.
